The Landkreuzer P. 1000 "Ratte"
was a project of a super-heavy tank for use by Germany during the II World War, proposed by Krupp director
Edward Grotte in June 1942. It had to have 39 metres length, 14 metres width
and 11 metres height. Weighing 1.000.000 kg machine was supposed to be
supported by 41 persons. Vehicle was guarded by 360 mm steel Armor. Powered by
eight 20-cylinder marine diesel engines Ratte was to be equipped in two 280mm
ship cannons, one 128mm cannon, two 15mm anti-aircraft machine guns and eight 20mm anti-aircraft machine guns.
Ratte accelerate 13 km/h speed. Its large size and weight would have rendered
the tank unable to cross bridges at the risk of collapsing them, and travelling
on roads would soon destroy them. Tank
was also very visible to the enemy air forces. Project was cancelled in 1943 by
Albert Speer, with no prototype tank ever built.
