M1 “Abrams” is an American third-generation
tank. Tank is named from general Creighton Abrams, commander of 37th Armor Regiment in second
World War, and commander of United States military forces in the Vietnam War.
M1 have 10 metres length, 3,5 metres width, 2,5 metres height 4 persons crew
and 65 tons weight. “Abrams” have from 30mm to 960mm(!) Armor. M1 is equipp in
120 mm L/44 M256A1 cannon, 12.7mm heavy machine gun and two 7.62 M2HB machine
guns. M1 is powered by Honeywell AGT1500C multi-fuel turbine engine with 1500
horsepower. Operational range of this tank is to 426 km. M1 also have 90 km/h
speed! This vehicle was designed at 1972–1979
years, and enter I service in 1980. Unit cost is 8.92 million US dollars. M1
have 5 variants: M1(produced from 1979 to 1985), M1IP(produced in 1984), M1A1(produced
from 1986 to 1992), M1A2(produced from 1992 to present day) and M1A2 SEP(produced
from 1999 to present day). M1 was used in Gulf War, Iraq War, War in
Afghanistan. Still modernised M1 “Abrams” is the one of the best tanks ever
built. Americans was built more than 10000 copies of this tank.
